After the Funeral

Your needs and your complete satisfaction with our firm remain very important to us after the funeral.  We are sincere in wanting you to know that we care and wish to be of further assistance.

How to claim Death Benefits

A variety of death benefits may be available to your family.  You may be qualified to receive Social Security Benefits, Veteran’s Administration Benefits, Life Insurance, Workmans Compensation, Union or Fraternal Organization death benefits and airline discounts for family members who need to change existing travel plans or schedule travel plans due to death.  In the event of the death of an innocent victim of a crime, the District Attorney’s Office in the county where the death occurred can discuss financial assistance from the Victims Compensation Fund.

Your Funeral Director is familiar with these benefits, and will be pleased to discuss them with you and assist you in filing claims.

Social Security

If the deceased has a surviving spouse or dependent child, a lump-sum death benefit of $225.00 is usually available.  The family member must apply for the payment personally.  It is also worthwhile to review other benefits that may be available to the survivors.  We advise that you begin this process within 30 days of the death.  To make an appointment with the Social Security office, phone 1-800-772-1213.  Parker Funeral Home, Inc. sends a statement of death by the funeral director to Social Security immediately after death.

  • An American Flag (usually drapes the casket)

For veterans who die of a service connected disability, the V.A. may pay an allowance to reimburse funeral costs up to $1100.00 (no additional V.A. death benefits would be available). Active duty military personnel are usually entitled to a greater amount, which can vary.
  • If not remarried the surviving spouse is eligible for burial in the National Cemetery.  Dependent children of the veteran are also eligible.

Claims for Veterans Benefits must be filed within two years of death by the veteran’s family, a non-family member who can prove that he paid for the veteran’s funeral services, or the funeral director. We will be pleased to make application for these benefits for you if you will provide us with the Veterans Honorable Discharge papers.  For V.A. assistance and information phone 1-800-827-1000.

Agents of all insuring companies should be contacted as soon as possible. They will supply the necessary information and forms for claims. Those policies that the survivors hold naming the decedent as a beneficiary should be changed.

How to Obtain Death Certificates

Certified copies of death certificates are usually necessary to file for Social Security death benefit, life insurance policy claims, transfers of financial instruments and tangible property, tax returns and numerous other claims. These are obtained at the county in which death occurred or the State Dept. of Vital Statistics. The cost in Colorado is $15.00 for the first certified copy and $6.00 for each additional copy. We suggest that you phone these offices before visiting. If an autopsy was performed and you wish to have a copy of the report, you should contact the County Coroner where the death occurred.

Prearrangement Services

We offer a variety of pre-payment options. Funeral pre-arrangement is simple, practical and thoughtful.  Our staff are always available to answer your questions. One of the most thoughtful things that you can do for your family’s peace of mind is to make certain that these arrangements are made well in advance of need.

Preplanning offers a number of advantages

  • It will provide positive assurance that the funeral will represent your personal beliefs or lifestyle
  • It will spare your family much concern and anxiety when the inevitable happens
  • It will offer your family great comfort, knowing that things have been taken care of.
  • Pre-payment plans will ease the financial stress for the family because the necessary funds will be available when needed.

At Parker Funeral Home, Inc.  we have learned that funeral expenses usually come when a family is least prepared to meet them … at a time when earnings have been stopped through illness, when expenses of all kinds weigh heavily on a bereaved family. It is then that preparedness can mean so much.

Our Prepaid Inflation-Proof Funeral Plans will assure a family that all details are taken care of at a time when calm, clear judgment prevails. If you are interested in more detailed information, simply ask to speak to one of our professional staff.
